This series came about from an innocent conversation with a friend, who answered a question about one of his bosses with “He’s a great micro-manager. He has a habit of hiring great people and doing their job for them”. That’s what dumb leaders do, was my reply. And so was born. What Dumb Leaders Do.
This series will focus not just on the dumb behaviour but how to fix and resolve, because every leader was once a dumb leader who learnt from their mistakes. However, other leaders stay dumb, because they refuse to learn.

Dumb Leaders hire great people and do their job for them. They micro-manage them and basically render their skill useless. That’s just dumb. Leader act like this as due to belief about them having to know everything and be the regarded expert. Great leaders learn this early on, that they don’t need to be an expert. They need to look after their people and that is their number one job. If they do that, and hire great people, it is acknowledged that their people will shine by doing outstanding jobs. Allowing their people to do they job they were hired for, provides benefits to the leader, benefits to the business and the team is engaged in what they do.
Don’t be a dumb leader. Hire great people and empower them to do their job. Align them with the vision of the business, allow them input into strategy, treat them well and watch the team soar.
Every leader was once a dumb leader. Every leader has made dumb mistakes. The good leaders learn from them and grow better leadership practices from them
